OUR PARTNERSHIP

Freedom x Soft Landing

At Freedom we’re proud to work with Soft Landing, a not-for-profit mattress recycling social enterprise.

Each year in Australia approximately one million mattresses are sent to landfill. In just one short year, Soft Landing has recycled over 538,000 mattresses, 7100 tonnes of steel, 1100 tonnes of foam and 920 tonnes of timber*.

Soft Landing's revenue goes entirely to helping create stable and meaningful jobs and their mission is to keep end-of-life mattresses and ensemble bases out of landfill and recover components to recycle.

Soft Landing specialises in preventing used mattresses and ensemble bases from ending up in landfill and recovering any components that are recyclable.

Who are Soft Landing?

Benefits of recycling your mattress

By recycling 75% of mattresses, Soft Landing keeps steel, foam and timber waste out of landfill and maximises the reuse of materials. Soft Landing chooses recycling methods with low impact to the environment.

For every 35 mattresses that are collected and recycled each day, a job is created for someone who needs one.

Soft Landing works with councils across each state to overcome illegal dumping. They also work with state and local governments to provide sustainable employment and training for people experiencing barriers to employment, with the goal to provide access to economic wellbeing, social, physical, and mental health.

TYPES OF MATTRESSES THAT CAN BE RECYCLED

Soft Landing is currently accepting the following types of mattresses for recycling:

- Memory foam and plain foam mattresses
- Pocket sprung mattresses
- Coil sprung mattresses
- Latex mattresses
- Ensemble bases
- Orthopaedic mattresses
- Pillow top mattresses

Please check the Soft Landings website for full details for collections in your local area.

What happens to my old mattress?

The components of a mattress and bed base can be separated and recycled into new products. Steel springs are sent to Australian scrap metal recyclers to be used in products like roof sheeting, while the foam of a mattress can be recycled and converted into carpet underlays, timber and husk can be converted into weed matting and mulch instead of taking up landfill space.
