Wall Art, Mirrors & Lighting: Pretty As a Picture - Decorating with Wall Art

Choosing art for your walls doesn’t need to be a big commitment or an expensive one. Here are five pointers for making wall art selection easy and fun.

Read the Room
Before you buy, identify the walls you want to fill. Where you place your art is just as important as the kind of wall hangings you choose. Dining rooms look fantastic with one large abstract piece in vibrant colours as they can stimulate conversation and create a focal point. Our Ace of Spades Framed Canvas is a great choice for minimalist interiors. For a more traditional look, consider vintage-style pencil drawings to add subtle elegance. The Dragonfly Framed Print is monochrome enough to be modern, but detailed enough to add a traditional element.

Mix The Medium
If the wall space that needs attention is quite large, don’t stick to just one specific medium. Mixing photography, acrylic, oil and pencil together creates an eclectic, curated look. The subject matter also doesn’t need to be the same, however a hint of theme can tie the art together. Think loose connections like nature or light and combine frames with glass mounts and canvases. The White Lighthouse Framed Canvas could complement a different piece like the From the Meadow Framed Print as they both reference the outdoors.

Personal Gallery
A big trend is the gallery wall – a collection of different wall art pieces in different sizes and frames, arranged together creatively and often in close proximity to each other. Mixed mediums look striking in gallery walls and often a collection of wall hangings like this can turn an empty wall into a statement. Bring your gallery to life by painting the wall behind it a feature colour and allow yourself to hang the pieces freely. In a gallery wall there is no need to stick to a certain height or width between frames – spread them high and low and even at an angle across the wall.

Beyond the Frame
Wall art isn’t just a great photo or an antique portrait. Pretty much anything can be displayed on a wall if cleverly and tastefully chosen. Think hanging rugs or a large mirror at the end of a passage or vinyl stickers along the corridor wall. Fairy lights and even creeping plants can be turned into art when placed well. Our Driftwood Garland works well in a bathroom for a seaside feel and brings rustic charm to a bedroom, strung horizontally above the headboard. Select two Geddes Gold Wall Hangings in the entrance hall to flank a mirror for perfect symmetry.

Timepieces
Clocks have to be the most overlooked form of wall art but can make such a statement when thoughtfully displayed. Use your clock along with framed pieces as part of your gallery wall or in between two stunning botanical prints like the Fiddleleaf Framed Canvas. Don’t stop at just one clock if you find a few you love – arrange them together against a bold wallpaper for a quirky kitchen wall piece. We love the Balaclava in Copper clustered with the Jackson in Natural and the Hedland in White.

At Freedom, we stock a huge range of wall art and print canvases so you can make your home your own.
